Why did Instagram limit hashtags?
In late 2025, Instagram began enforcing a strict new limit of 5 hashtags per post and Reel, a major shift from the long-standing limit of 30. The aim is to drive away from a “hashtag-based discovery” for Instagram users towards a “AI-driven discovery” experience.
The 3 drivers for change:
- Spam: The “30-hashtag strategy” often led to “hashtag stuffing,” where users used irrelevant tags to “game” the algorithm. This created cluttered captions and poor search results.
- Improving the Algorithm: Instagram’s AI now “reads” your content (image pixels, on-screen text, audio, and captions) to understand what it is about. It no longer needs 30 hashtags to categorize your post. Too many hashtags can “confuse” the AI.
- “Reach vs. categorization”: Hashtags are now used for categorization (helping the app group your post with similar ones) rather than distribution (showing it to more people).
Differences in Limits (Posts, Reels, Stories)
Instagram Posts – 5 Hashtags
Instagram Reels – 5 Hashtags
Instagram Stories – 10 Hashtags
What should you do instead?
To maintain your visibility under the new rules, focus on Instagram SEO. Thus use Keywords. Write descriptive captions that include keywords your audience might search for.
Note niche hashtags. Use 3–5 highly specific hashtags (e.g., #VintageLeicaPhotography instead of just #Photography).
It is also great news that “On-Screen Text” is scanned and the text you type inside your Reels and Stories is used to determine the topic.
Call to action points going from Instagram hashtags to keywords
- Don’t Hide Tags in Comments: Instagram now prefers hashtags to be in the original caption so the AI can process them alongside your text immediately.
- Alt Text is Key: Go to Advanced Settings > Write Alt Text before you post. Describe your Reel in detail using keywords
- Audio keywords: Instagram indexes audio, so saying some of your keywords in your Reel helps the algorithm categorize you faster.
Good luck!
